Daughter of Night

Today I am writing to you to talk about a very interesting SCP, the Daughter of Shadows or SCP-029.

Summary

SCP-029 is, for all intents and purposes, a pubescent girl of Asiatic-Indian descent. She appears to suffer from alopecia universalis, which means 80% of her skin is jet black with the remaining 20% being pure white. Over her time in containment, the black parts of her skin have increased in size. However, this growth stopped when the foundation located and destroyed all of her ‘followers’ – see below.

SCP-029 is homicidal and has shown she can use any item as a weapon. But despite her homicidal tendencies she will not shed blood, she kills in other ways such as strangulation.

Her movements are agile and on average 4 times faster than humans. She also has an inhuman tolerance to damage. She also has the ability to bend men to her will, they lose all control and become complaint to her will alone. But her inhuman abilities are weakened when in the light be it natural or artificial.

Her given name translates to Daughter of darkness/shadows/night and prior to her incarceration she gathered a cult of men around her who would sacrifice people to her with the aim of raising their goddess into the world.

SCP-029 is kept in a class 5 containment cell. This cell is bare, she can have no access to anything that is physical in nature. She has requested things like bed, books and clothes. All were denied, until one doctor, Dr Bodeen, decided to give her clothing as they felt the conditions, she was in were inhumane. This did not go well.

She is not fed and seems to suffer no ill effects from lack of nutrition. She is watched by 5 guards at all times, two on monitors and three outside the cell. Should anyone male come into contact with her they are to be detained, interviewed and then terminated.

My Thoughts

This was one of the early SCP’s and it still holds up today. At first glance the creature that is SCP-029 is a small child but immediately she is established as being something other. Not only is she homicidal but she has inhumane abilities and seems incapable of dying.

SCP-029 taps into the ‘trope’ of a haunted or deadly child’ something that should be sweet and innocent, vulnerable and incapable is the exact opposite. Not only is she capable but she’s powerful and aggressive. SCP-029 taps into commonly held instinctive fears, she is a predator, fear of her is logical.  SCP-029 also uses fear of Monsters and supernatural entities, as well as fears around more intangible aspects of human nature, she robs men of their will and seems to only desire death and destruction.

SCP-029 is simple, but it is her simplicity that makes her work well in the SCP format. These bite sized reports with only so much information mean that simple concepts are most effective. We are left wanting to know more.
