Best Films to Watch for Writing Inspiration

Excellent Writing

Today I wanted to talk to you about three horror films that have taught me writing lessons.

While these are all stellar horror films in their own right, I’m not here to gush about the films themselves (except maybe one), I’m bringing them to your attention to show you how these films are great examples of subversion in horror and how to write certain things really well.

So while none of these films are my personal top horror films(except maybe one) they are all brilliant examples of excellent writing.

Clichés: Aliens

Cliche’s are in all genres, not just horror.

Today I am writing about a cliche that can span across horror and Sci Fi. Aliens.

Admittedly I tend to watch Sci-Fi more so than read it, I tend to absorb a bigger percentage of this genre via movies, games and television. But that aside the cliche’s of the genre shine through in all mediums.

Videogames: Alien Isolation

One of the best games!

Continuing our conversation about scary video games with a sci fi twist, today I want to talk about Alien Isolation. A very popular and well-conceived game, it is guaranteed to build suspense and dread in any player.

Synopsis (SPOILERS)

You are Amanda Ripley, and it is approximately 15 years after the events of the movie Alien. Ellen Ripley’s (your mum in case you were wondering) ship has been found and you are offered a place on the retrieval team. You arrive at a space station where Ellen’s ship is being held, only to find the station badly damaged (almost like something horrendous happened). You end up separated from your team (because of course you do) and must get around the station on your own.
