Katie Recommends: Tales from the Gas Station

My favourite!

Today i am sending you something amazing.

Tales From the Gas Station

Working at a dead-end retail job in the middle of nowhere can be hard. The long hours. The helpless customers. The enormous eldritch horror living deep below the building. As the only full-time employee at the 24-hour gas station at the edge of town, Jack has pretty much seen it all. But when he decides to start an online journal documenting the bizarre day-to-day occurrences, he unwittingly attracts the attention of much more than just a few conspiracy theorists.

With the body count steadily on the rise and a dark, ancient force infecting the dreams of everyone around him, Jack will do everything in his power to stay out of the way and mind his own business. After all, he’s just a gas station clerk. It’s not like he’s getting paid enough to wage battle against the nightmarish aberrations plaguing his community. Besides, he already has his hands full attempting to manage all those mysterious lawn gnomes, the mutant raccoons, and the charming phantom cowboy who lives in the bathroom.

Based on the award-winning creepypasta by GasStationJack, Tales from the Gas Station: Volume One is a love letter to the pioneers of classic horror tailored to a generation that grew up in the era of smartphones and WiFi.

Katie Recommends: Caitlin Doughty

Smoke gets in your eyes

Today I want to talk to you about Caitlin Doughty.

Caitlin runs a YouTube channel called Ask a Mortician.

Now you might think I’m recommending this becuase, after all we are a horror appreceation blog, and oooOOooo dead bodies, that’s got to be horror. But that’s not why I’m recommending her, Caitlin works hard to demystify and remove the ‘ick’ and the ‘horror’ from death, and she does this well, in part due to her humor and delivery.

I am an avid horror fan but I do also think it’s important that we reconnect with certain things that have been labelled as ‘horrifying’ and realise just what’s involved.

That and it is morbidly fascinating.

Sadly Caitlin does not have a channel trailer for me to share with you, so I’m going to try and sum up her channel and share with you one of my favourite videos. She does a great deal of discussion about the funeral industry, demystifying it, but she also does other series like her iconic corpse series, fave of mine linked below.

Katie Recommends: Kendall Rae

Today I want to recommend another YouTube channel.

While the main focus of our letters is horror, True Crime has been an interest of mine for a long time, often the real world can be scarier than fiction.

With that in mind I highly recommend Kendall Rae on YouTube.

Kendall’s channel has a wonderful collection of True Crime videos where she dissects everything, from the events that happened, how the story was covered in the media/social media, and her opinion on it. She also encourages discussion and if the story hasn’t been resolved she posts updates. She also puts out videos about people who have gone missing and people who have been found, again dissecting the situation and presenting all the information in an easy to watch way.

Lastly, I want to also bring to your attention the amazing fund raising work she does for Thorn. Thorn is an organisation that builds technology which protects people, partially children from sexual abuse and human trafficking. Kendall and her subscribers create awesome clothing designs which she then sells via her channel and all the profits go to Thorn and she’s raised an amazing amount.

Overall, it’s a great channel, a must watch for anyone interested in real world horror.

Katie recommends: Top 5 Stephen King Books

The master of horror

I wanted to write to you with a recommendation today and I wanted that to be a book. Naturally, my mind wondered to one of my favourite horror authors, Stephen King, and that is when I hit a brick wall.

I cannot choose just one.

I genuinely cannot choose my favourite King book. I have multiple favourites, hell even the books that are not my favourite ones I can still find things I really like about them. So, today I have decided to talk about my top five most re-readable King books. These are the books I go back to again and again and again. The ones I must replace because the spines give up or the covers fall off.

Katie Recommends: What to do this Halloween

This is Halloween, this is Halloween

With winter, rather suddenly, drawing in, the nights are getting darker and the world is getting colder. October is just beginning and with the pandemic still hanging around like an unwanted drunk at a party, it’s looking like a socially distanced Halloween is on the menu.

Usually, it’s around this time of year that I start talking about interesting ways to spend Halloween with friends and family, but I’m a responsible adult who gives a shit about my community and the global community at large, so I am not going to be recommending interesting outdoor or group activities this year. Instead, I’m going to turn my focus inward, after all, what could be better on a cold and spooky night than to curl up on a warm sofa and watch some killer films.

This isn’t the first time I’ve made film recommendations and won’t be the last, but where I usually try to explain why I think a film is worth watching, and thus run into spoiler-ish territory, this week I’m just going to be sharing some awesome trailers and let you make your own decisions.

Bonus! As it’s not really a film.

Katie Recommends: Horror Movies.

Movie night!

Today I would like to tell you about some recommendations, Paranormal Activity, Cabin in the Woods, and Autopsy of Jane Doe.

I will tell you a little bit about each of the films and why I think they are worth watching. That being said I won’t spoil anything. After all, I’m recommending you go watch these yourself.
