I have a question for you

Questions so many questions!

To my Dearest Friend

Today I would like to ask you a question if I may.

As I had mentioned previously this year I will be starting my PhD in creative writing, I intend to write about disability representation within the horror genre. I will be focusing on literary representation, but not excluding film and video games.

As part of a creative writing PhD, I will be expected to produce a piece of creative work alongside an academic essay exploring the concepts and topics of my research. I initially intended my creative piece to be a novel, a horror novel specifically. Still, after discussion with my tutors and a look at my writing history, it was suggested to me to write a collection of short stories instead. I confess I am very enthusiastic about this idea.

My initial issue with writing a novel was that I would not be able to explore all the various types of disability and horror tropes I wished to. This will not be an issue with a short story collection as each story can focus on a different type of disability, and a different horror trope in each story! As I said I’m very excited about this idea.

Well I do have some ideas I wish to put the question to you, what disabilities would you like to see explored?

I very much appreciate you taking the time to respond, it’s more helpful than I can say.

Dementia would be so interesting. I’m think about the movie The Taking of Deborah Logan and how they used dementia, it was really frightening and saddening. I thought it was well done.

Body Integrity Identity Disorder would be a fascinating one I’ve never seen focused on in horror.
